Welcome to Satsang!
Sri H.W.L. Poonja, known to his devotees and friends as Papaji, was born in Punjab on October 13th 1913, and died in Lucknow, India on 6th September 1997. Papaji was a direct disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the renowned sage who lived almost all of his life at Mt Arunachala in Southern India. Papaji said many times that he had no formal teaching, and that there was no teacher and no student. He travelled extensively for most of his life, both in India and the rest of the world, and never formed any organization or structure around him.
During the last few years of his life, when he was already in his late seventies, his age and health required him to travel less, and he settled in the suburb of Indira Nagar in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. During these years, between 1991 and 1997 when he died, thousands of people, sincere in their longing for freedom and true awakening, came to visit him. Some stayed a few weeks, some stayed for months or years. Five days a week, during these years, Papaji gave “Satsang” (Sat means Truth, and sangha means a gathering of like minded friends, so Satsang means a gathering of friends in the Truth). These gatherings were always free of any charge or any demand to join anything or to changes one’s outer life in any way. In the same spirit of unconditional generosity in which these meetings were originally conducted, this website welcomes you to Satsang with Papaji.
